STEM Teachers Receive CHS Foundation Grants & Present at National Agriculture Conference

STEM teachers, Jo Ann Hebert and Catherine Olinde, wrote and received the CHS Foundation grants worth 500 dollars.  The awards were applied to the registration for the National Ag in the Classroom Conference located in Portland, Maine during the week of June 25th through 29th.

While attending this year’s conference, the teachers were able to participate in sessions which included incorporating STEM activities in science and math using agriculture.  Sessions included AgBots: Kids Programming for the Future, From “STEM” to Plate, Learn to Develop Engaging STEM lessons in less than 60 minutes, and “Udderly” Creative STEAM classroom fun. All sessions demonstrated how classroom lessons could be enhanced with the use of agriculture.

On Friday, June 29th, the STEM teachers became the presenters and offered three mini-sessions titled, “Three Classes One Garden.”  Sixth-grade math teacher Catherine Olinde explained how the school garden is used to enhance math lessons.  Mrs. Hebert, who this past year taught seventh-grade science and eighth grade English Language Arts, presented ideas on using the garden in these content areas. Students created picture collages using seeds, hatched chickens, studied the anatomy of a chicken, researched and presented various seed packets.
