Rougon 5th and 6th Graders Travel to Memphis

Rougon 5th and 6th Graders Travel to Memphis

The 5th and 6th-grade students at Rougon Elementary traveled to Memphis, TN.  This educational experience was led by Ms. Carlene Long, the social studies teacher at Rougon. While in Memphis, students had the opportunity to visit the Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel. The Lorraine is the first museum dedicated to civil rights in America, and the site of the April 4, 1968 assassination of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a prominent civil rights leader. The students also visited the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. Stax was a major record label in the south that produced acts such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. and the MG’s (Rufus Thomas and Carla Thomas). Stax was instrumental in breaking the color barrier in the 1960s. Artists of all races made music at Stax since the owners, Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton’s only requirement to work at Stax was that you had musical talent. The administration, faculty, and students would like to thank everyone who helped make this educational experience possible.
