Rosenwald names Dawn Richard Teacher of the Year

Rosenwald names Dawn Richard Teacher of the Year

Dawn Richard can be found after school and on weekends working in her kindergarten classroom down Yellow Hall at Rosenwald Elementary.  Stepping foot through her classroom door it immediately becomes obvious that Dawn was born to teach. She loves the students in her classroom, and they love her.  Dawn has created a culture where students love to learn and more importantly, learn what it means to respect others and themselves.

According to Dawn, “Education has always been an intricate part of my life. I understood the importance of education early on. My grandmother is a retired teacher, and I cherish the inspiration she unknowingly imparted. She loved her students genuinely and wanted the best for each one of them. It was then that I knew I was going to be a teacher.

My love for learning and children lead me to attend college and earn a baccalaureate degree in Interdisciplinary Education from Southern University in Baton Rouge. Teaching and learning with children is a passion that started with my own children and has since grown and flourished. My husband and I found fulfillment being involved in our children’s activities and volunteering at their schools.

I began my career in the Pointe Coupee School System as a paraprofessional where I worked with some of Pointe Coupee’s finest educators.  It was under their guidance that I was able to glean many wonderful strategies and techniques. I am also a Sunday School teacher, and I have worked with the Young People’s Department at my church. I have always had the awesome opportunity to be surrounded by wonderful young people and amazing educators. My goal as an educator has always been to educate the whole child, heart and mind.”
