Valverda’s Fourth Graders are “Surviving Hurricanes”

Valverda’s Fourth Graders are “Surviving Hurricanes”

The past few weeks, Ms. Lindsey Simon’s fourth grade students have been working on writing their hurricane narrative for the end of their reading unit. Throughout the unit, students studied and read a variety of texts about hurricanes including the destruction they can cause and intensity they can have on peoples’ lives. When reading the texts, students completed a number of other projects such as creating timelines of storms, listening to firsthand accounts of hurricanes, and creating text features to add to their hurricane texts. For the end of the unit, students planned to write a narrative about a character who would live through a hurricane of their choice which they learned about. In their reading logs, students kept track of the facts they learned about hurricanes. Through the end writing process, students brainstormed their ideas, used a graphic organizer to organize their thoughts, wrote a rough draft, and final draft. The stories written about a created character living through a hurricane were brilliant! So many students created interesting characters as a lead in their stories and included realistic details to describe the character surviving the storm. The fourth graders did an amazing job and are looking forward to their next writing task!
