Today, June 20th, marks the summer solstice and the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere! The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, with the most hours of sunlight.
This year’s solstice is unique — it’s the earliest summer solstice since 1796 — that was 228 years ago! The solstice occurs at 3:50 PM CDT (Baton Rouge).
After today, the days will gradually start getting shorter again as we head towards the fall equinox.

NOAA Weather Service forecasters at the Climate Prediction Center predict above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basic this year. NOAA's outlook for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which spans from June 1 to November 30, predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal season, a 10% chance of a near-normal season and a 5% chance of a below-normal season.
NOAA is forecasting a range of 17 to 25 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 8 to 13 are forecast to become hurricanes (wind of 74 mph or higher), including 4 to 7 major hurricanes (category 3, 4, or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). Forecasters have a 70% confidence in these ranges.
SUNBUCKS- Summer EBT. In addition to the newly expanded summer feeding options, SUN Bucks help fill that gap by providing grocery benefits to help families put meals on the table when schools are closed. SUN Bucks will provide families with $120 for each eligible school aged child to buy groceries during the summer break. This program is through DCFS and not through the school system. Guardians/Parents/Family are invited and encouraged to attend. Students receiving an award were sent home with an invitation last week. Pointe Coupee Schools and the District Office will be closed tomorrow, May 14, 2024 due to weather related issues parishwide. Please stay off the roads and stay safe!
Students at all schools in the District will be dismissed at 1:00pm on Graduation Day- this Wednesday- to allow time for faculty, staff, and students to attend the ceremony at the LSU Assembly Center.
This is the final reminder for Senior Walk. Please read carefully. Senior Walk is tomorrow, Monday, May 13th. Seniors are still students of the Pointe Coupee Parish School District and all rules, policies and procedures apply and shall be enforced. LHS Seniors will meet at LHS at 7:35 AM. STEM Seniors will meet at STEM at 7:00 AM. All Seniors must follow the dress code. Seniors must be dressed in cap and gown. Seniors will walk through all the schools in Pointe Coupee Parish. Seniors must arrive on time, or the bus will leave without you. You can wear, and you are encouraged to wear, comfortable shoes because there will be a lot of walking. Everyone is required to wear shoes the entire time so please be sure the shoes you wear are comfortable because there will be a lot of walking. The bus will depart on time. Make certain you are on time. To participate you must ride the bus with all the other students who are graduating.
